Playstation's Guide to Screen Time

Digital screens are a part of everyday family life, and finding the right balance between screen time and other activities can be tricky.

The Government’s Beststartinlife website is a good place to start.

The Government’s Beststartinlife website has the following advice:

  • Under 2 years: avoid screen time other than for shared activities with family that encourage bonding, interaction and conversation.

  • 2 – 5 years: Try to keep it to 1 hour a day, less if possible

They also advice that content is slow-paced and predictable, which is better for young brains, as young children’s brains are stimulated much more easily than adult’s.  Choose content with simple stories, fewer scene changes and characters speaking slowly.

Childnet and NSPCC both offer help and advice for parents and carers on online safety guides

This includes

  • Turn screen time into a shared experience, watching alongside your child, so you can interact and comment on the content, you can also spot problems quickly.

  • Set up a child account on YouTube and ensure auto-play features are turned off.

  • Choose age-appropriate apps and sites
